I whole heartily agree with your article, however I have additional thoughts. If the wealthy buys a Gulfstream jet it does create employment in Savannah which the economic impact might ripple up to Asheville via tourism. When I first saw a picture of Evander Holyfield's new $4,000,000 mansion in south Atlanta I was irritated. However, once I thought more about it I decided that most likely all the $4M was spent creating US jobs from both the material and labor. If Holyfield had bought stock per your article, land, existing buildings or Picasso's little US jobs would have been created and those would have equalled roughly 5% of his expenditures for the commissions associated with each purchase. I believe the tax on the wealthy should be only for spending their wealth creating jobs and not just for capital gains for holding previously issued stocks.

Thank you Terry. Beautifully said! I have forwarded your post to Dr Susan Grossman at Ganas, who has some very lovely ideas why intentional communities foster healthier lifestyles. I have this fantasy that you two could collaborate on a story for YES magazine.

I've always wondered why American politics struggles so much with switching to a system used in many European countries. In the UK we have the NHS, which I admit does have its faults but on the whole it does provide an excellent level of care across the board. If the NHS is not good enough and you can afford it then you can always pay for private healthcare anyway.
I had the unfortunate first hand experience of being admitted to hospital when I was on a visit to the states. While the care I received was good enough I was shocked with the bill I was presented with. Luckily I did have travel insurance which took care of my medical expenses but if I had been an American citizen without healthcare I would have been screwed.
Speaking to the hospital porter, the taxi driver on the way back to the hotel and the bus boy who helped me back to my room I formed the opinion that anyone on less than the 'average' wage has a real struggle paying for health insurance and as a result were quite envious of the National Health Service we have in the UK. Now I don't know enough about American politics to make any hard points on this matter but I still struggle to see why the US government spends so much on 'defence' yet nothing on providing a system that is proven to work here in Europe.

Hmm healthy lifestyle, close community essential thereto--sounds like monastery life would qualify! Next would come the intentional communities you reference. I wonder if we could identify people who qualify without membership in either of those communities? Maybe by canvassing folks who shop organically, who buy food at local markets? I would be interested.
